THE IMPORTANCE OF DAKOR

For centuries together, the idol remained in the temple of Danknath Mahadev on Gomti tank. Later, it was installed in Laxmiji temple built by Ratanji Nandanji, seth of Cambay, and there after in the persent temple. shri Gopal Jagannath Tambwekar, a shroff and banker to the Peshwas and the Giakwars, went on a pilgrimage to Dwarika from Poona in about 1770 A. D. When he was camping near Baroda with his party, he dreamt a dream in which Lord Dwarkadhish gave hima glimpse (Darshan) and asked him to go to Dakor for the realisation of his wishes. Shri Gopal Jagannath Tambwekar, with his companions (Sangh) came to Dakor from Baroda; and at Dakor he had the glimpse (Darshan) of the Lord i.e., the image of Dwarkadhish which he had seen in his dream. Realising that his dream had come true and in as much as he was in affluent circumastances and a satunch devotee of Lord Krishna he purchased lands in Dakor, constructed a huge temple for the deity, his residence (Kot) adjoining the temple and founded the locality ofGopalpura near the kot for the learned brahmins. It is said that Shri Gopal Jagannath Tambwekar, in his previous birth was born in a brahmin family inthe village named Saras of Dravid Desh. He was learned but poor. Once, he happened to go for a pilgrimage to Balaji. Seeing the devotees donating thousands of rupees to the deity,he was displeased and prayed to the Almighty(Balaji) that had he been rich, he would have likewise offered donations. Thus, he requested the deity to fulfill his desire. He stayed at Balaji for 20 days and every day he offered prayers and beseeched Balaji to give him ample wealth so that he would consturct as big a temple as Balaji at any other religious place and install his idol therein and thus become eternally famou. On 21st day Lord Balaji gave him a glimpse(Darshan) and promised him to fulfil his desire and told him that after 200 year, he would have his birth in a brahmin family in Tamb village (Of Karad Taluka of Satara District in Maharashtra) in the South of this country when he would have an opprtunity to accomplish his ardent desire.
